Top Reasons Why Mascara Flakes
I’ve gathered five of the most common causes of mascara flaking and their easy fixes. Once you identify what’s causing your mascara to crumble, preventing the issue shouldn’t be hard.
1. Formula Issues
While your mascara can be fairly new, it may still flake. This can be due to the formula itself.
Some mascaras have ingredients that dry out quickly or don’t stick well to your lashes.
Fix: You need to be careful when purchasing your mascara. Opt for high-quality brands that contain nourishing ingredients like vitamin E and beeswax.
2. Applying Too Quickly
Another reason could be the technique you’re using to apply your mascara.
Rushing the process and not allowing time for each layer to dry properly can cause your lashes to clump and flake.
Fix: Wait for your lashes to be slightly sticky before applying another coat. In general, the ideal time is between 20 and 30 seconds.
3. Wet Eyelashes
When your eye area isn’t dry, it can affect your mascara and cause it to lose grip. Even if it’s eye cream or liquid foundation, it can lead to smudging.
Fix: You have to wait for anything you put on your eye area to dry before applying mascara. After the foundation, you can use a setting powder to ensure everything is locked in place.
4. Too Dry or Expired Mascara
Old mascaras tend to dry out and flake more easily. Not just because it may have expired, but also because the more you use it, the more air gets inside.
Fix: Consider replacing your old mascara three to six months after opening.
To extend the life of your existing mascara, avoid pumping the wand in and out too hard. Doing so pushes even more air inside.
5. Containing Lash Fibers
Some mascara types contain those tiny lash-extending fibers. While they work well at giving more volume and length, they tend to flake more than others.
Fix: To continue using the mascara you love, apply a final coat of any waterproof mascara over it. This way, you get the effect you need without the flaking part.
