For those of you who want a quick answer, both brands take a completely different approach to their products.
The Ordinary offers high-potency, single-ingredient products at accessible prices. On the other hand, Paula’s Choice often puts more than one active ingredient per product, making their products more diverse, but they come with a considerably higher price tag.
In other words, if you want to create a customized routine tailored to your specific needs and you’re on a budget, The Ordinary is a better choice.
Alternatively, if having one product that covers more than one skincare step in one go to potentially shorten your prep time, and money is no issue, go for Paula’s Choice.

Paula’s Choice Vs The Ordinary.
Paula’s Choice was founded by Paula Begoun in 1995. The brand’s philosophy centers around truth in beauty, focusing on scientifically researched ingredients and formulations.
The brand is known for its commitment to producing effective, fragrance-free, and cruelty-free products.
On the other hand, The Ordinary was launched in 2016 by Deciem. The brand prides itself on “clinical formulations with integrity.”
The Ordinary revolutionized the skincare industry with its no-frills approach, offering single-ingredient products at remarkably low prices.
Here’s how the two brands compare to each other (I won’t mention the pricing part because that point is already covered above):
Product Range
Paula’s Choice
Paula’s Choice boasts a wide range of products designed to address various skin concerns.
I found many cleansers, toners, serums, and moisturizers to cater to pretty much any skin condition.

The brand also offers comprehensive solutions for acne, aging, hyperpigmentation, and sensitivity.
One of the best-selling products worth mentioning is the 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant. It’s effective in treating blackheads and acne, and for achieving clear, glowy skin.
The Ordinary
The Ordinary has a more streamlined product range. You’ll find that they focus primarily on serums and treatments.

In other words, their products are better suited for those who want to customize their skincare routine by targeting specific issues with potent active ingredients.
User Experience and Effectiveness
Paula’s Choice
Paula’s Choice is often praised for its immediate results. However, I wouldn’t take other user experiences without trying myself.

I ended up trying their 10% Azelaic Acid Booster for my sensitive skin’s redness after an acne breakout, and I noticed a considerable improvement in my skin’s health in less than a week.
Plus, I noticed that it didn’t mix with my other skin care products. I may have just gotten lucky, but the reason I’m saying this is because my experience with The Ordinary didn’t go as smoothly.
The Ordinary
Ordinary products can be highly effective. However, since every product focuses on a single active ingredient, you need to know the exact skin condition you have to find a suitable product.
This was painful for me to do, but I had to hold my routine for another acne breakout to happen so I could try a similar product from The Ordinary. I ended up trying the Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%.

This is when I learned that having the same active ingredient and even the same concentration doesn’t necessarily produce the same results.
This is how it was for my sensitive skin, at least. You may have a different result.
I was quite happy with the initial results, which took around 10 days to be noticeable to others. However, the product was often pilling on my skin, and it sometimes caused my skin to look a little dull.
I later discovered that it was mixing with my moisturizer, as the pilling and dull sheen started to reduce after I stopped the moisturizer.
It wasn’t a big deal, but since it’s a comparison, I have to tell you everything!
I think with The Ordinary, you just need to know how to use the products – and then you can get some really amazing results.
Suitability for Different People and Skin Types
Paula’s Choice
Paula’s Choice offers a generous range of products, making them suitable for pretty much all skin types, including sensitive, oily, dry, and combination skin.
Perhaps it’s the fact that a lesser concentration of more active ingredients can be more gentle on the skin.
Additionally, Paula’s Choice provides detailed guidance on which products are best for specific skin concerns, making it easier for consumers to build an effective skincare routine without extensive knowledge.
The Ordinary
The ordinary still caters to various skin types, and there’s pretty much a product for every skin as well.
However, its high-potency products may require more careful consideration, especially for sensitive skin.
While the brand offers detailed product descriptions and usage guidelines, the minimalist formulations might necessitate additional products to achieve a balanced routine.
This can be a bit overwhelming for beginners but offers flexibility for more experienced users.
Final Words
To sum things up, choose Paula’s Choice if you have sensitive skin and prioritize gentle formulations.
It’s also a better choice if you prefer a streamlined routine with pre-mixed, multi-ingredient products.
On the other hand, choose The Ordinary if you enjoy a DIY approach and want to customize your routine.
Note that this requires a good understanding of skincare actives and how to combine them safely.
