Over the years, I’ve learned that using the right ingredients in my skincare routine makes all the difference.
While doing some research, I came across two powerful ingredients. But the big question was; can I use niacinamide and tretinoin together? Or should I use them separately?
Let me answer that right away.
Understanding the Power Couple: Niacinamide and Tretinoin
Before exploring the combined effect of both substances, it’s best to explain what each one does.
Niacinamide
Most people know niacinamide as vitamin B3. Dermatologists often recommend it for its soothing and strengthening benefits.
It’s excellent for improving the skin barrier function, calming inflammation, and reducing redness.
Tretinoin
Tretinoin is a form of vitamin A, and it’s considered the gold standard for anti-aging and acne treatment.

It works by speeding up cell turnover and encouraging skin rejuvenation. It often leaves your skin feeling smooth and looking radiant.
Yes, You Can Use Them Together
Using niacinamide together with tretinoin isn’t just possible, it’s actually a good idea.
Tretinoin treats several skin issues like acne and uneven skin texture. It could cause some irritation though, and this is where niacinamide comes to the rescue.
Niacinamide acts like a buffer, making tretinoin more tolerable, especially for sensitive skin.
Why Does the Niacinamide and Tretinoin Combo Work?
The following are some of the benefits I noticed, shortly after incorporating tretinoin and niacinamide into my skincare routine.
Niacinamide helped strengthen my skin barrier, while tretinoin did its purifying and rejuvenating work.
Additionally, tretinoin causes skin dryness, but the oil-control capabilities of niacinamide balance that out.
Tretinoin leaves a few post-inflammatory marks after tackling acne or fine lines. Meanwhile, niacinamide is legendary in reducing redness and smoothing out these marks.
Using either substance alone was good, but in conjunction, the effects on my complexion were amazing. My skin looks definitely clearer and brighter.
Adding Niacinamide and Tretinoin to My Skincare Routine

Every skin type has its own requirements, so after a bit of experimentation, I discovered the routine that really flattered my skin.
Evening Routine
I followed this routine for 12 weeks.
- Use a gentle cleanser
- Apply a lightweight niacinamide serum
- Wait 2-3 minutes
- Apply a pea-sized amount of tretinoin
- Wait 5 min
- Follow with a moisturizer
Morning Routine
I am a busy person, so I keep my morning routine simple, refreshing, and protective.
- Use a gentle cleanser
- Apply niacinamide serum
- Moisturize
- Touch up with sunscreen, SPF 30
Important Tips For Mixing Niacinamide With Tretinoin
If you haven’t used tretinoin before, use it alone 2-3 times per week, to see if it triggers allergies or other sensitivities. After 3-4 weeks, introduce niacinamide.
Always patch-test new products to make sure they are suitable for you. Seek medical advice if you notice excessive redness, a burning sensation, or flaking beyond the normal.
Who Should Be Careful While Using a Niacinamide and Tretinoin?

I am a big fan of this skincare combo, however, it might not be the best remedy for your skin.
You should check with your dermatologist before using it, especially, in the following cases:
- You have rosacea
- Your skin is extremely sensitive
- You are pregnant or could conceive during the treatment
- You are nursing
- You have a compromised skin barrier
Final Thoughts
So can you use niacinamide with tretinoin? Absolutely! And it’s one of my favorite combos.
For optimal results, start slowly, listen to your skin, and adjust accordingly. You can get the regenerative effects of tretinoin, while niacinamide keeps your skin protected and nourished.
