When to Put Mascara on Your Bottom Lashes
Mascara on the bottom lashes can open up the eyes and create that wide-eyed, doll-like look.
And if you’ve been blessed with naturally long lower lashes? A few swipes of mascara can really accentuate them.
I’d definitely recommend adding mascara to the bottom lashes if you’re going for bold and glam, like for photos or a night out.
The extra definition and length make the eyes pop, even from a distance.
But how do you achieve soft and fluttery lower lashes?
The key is in the formula. Skip the thick, heavy mascaras and use something lightweight and lengthening instead.

I especially love L’Oreal Paris Telescopic Original Mascara and IT Cosmetics Tightline Mascara. They never disappoint!
When to Skip It
There are times when you’ll want to pass on bottom lash mascara. If you’re somewhere hot and humid, it’s likely to run and smudge.
The same goes for sensitive or watery eyes, or if you wear contacts. It’s not just worth the risk of getting mascara in your eye.
Plus, it takes extra time – not always practical for everyday makeup.
Mascara can also make your peepers look smaller if you have droopy eyes or if your lower lashes are sparse or stick straight out.
Does Mascara on Bottom Lashes Make You Look Older?
There may be some truth to it – the volume can draw more attention to fine lines or dark circles.
But I try not to get too caught up in those kinds of beauty “rules.” If mascara on your lower lashes makes you feel fab and pretty, then by all means, do it!
How to Apply Mascara on Bottom Lashes

Want to try mascara on your bottom lashes? Here’s a quick guide for a smudge-free look:
- Place a tissue under your lashes, close to your water line, to catch any fallout.
- Hold the mascara wand vertically and gently apply the mascara to your lashes using the tip.
- Once it dries, dust a little translucent powder or apply clear brow gel over your lashes to seal it.
A few more tips:
- Avoid heavy creams or skincare products under your eyes, as they can cause your mascara to transfer.
- Prime your bottom lashes to help the mascara last longer. Just one coat will do.
- For a softer look, ditch the black mascara and use brown instead.
- Have Q-tips and micellar water ready to fix any mess.
- Apply a bit of eyeshadow along your lower lash line to help fill in and disguise sparse lashes.
- Go light with mascara on the bottom lashes. If you accidentally apply too much, gently remove the clumps with a clean mascara wand or lash comb.
Wrapping Up
So, should you put mascara on your bottom lashes? To be honest, it’s really up to you.
Personally, I love the look, but I know it’s not for everyone. As I always say, there’s no universal makeup rule, so wear whatever makes you feel good!
