It’s one thing to have either dry or oily skin. But if you have to deal with greasy and flaky skin patches, I know how difficult it is to find complexion products to suit your daily needs.
It might surprise you, but combination skin is a common issue for many. According to experts, over 60% of people experience and grapple with an oily T-zone (forehead, chin, and nose) and excessively parched cheeks.
Luckily, finding the best makeup for combination skin isn’t as hard as it looks.
As someone sharing the same skin woes, here are my top recommendations to manage combination skin and achieve a flawless finish.

Don’t Skip the Basics!
Prep your skin before applying any makeup. Ensuring your face is clean, smooth, and hydrated is the foundation for every good makeup routine. Plus it makes the products go on evenly.
For combination skin types, what you want is something that’s deep cleaning, yet doesn’t strip your skin of moisture.

For this step, I love using Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser for its gentle, non-irritating formula.
It’s lightweight and contains glycerin and aloe vera, helping maintain a natural moisture balance in the skin.
If your skin leans toward dryness, a dab of moisturizer does wonders for your cosmetics routine.
I prefer a moisturizing solution that absorbs well and quickly on sensitive skin types – fit for everyday use.

While it may sound like a tall order, I did discover La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer. It doesn’t have any artificial scent and it spreads incredibly well!
Get a Good Primer
The right primer should keep your complexion naturally balanced, cover imperfections, and keep your makeup from sliding off.

Armani Beauty Luminous Silk Hydrating Makeup Primer is a cult favorite among those who deal with dry and oily skin patches.
I like that it’s silky (true to its name) and my makeup glides smoothly over it.
The primer doesn’t leave any fragrances, which is heaven for my sensitive skin, and a miracle worker in hiding pores and redness, too.
A superb drugstore alternative is the Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Primer, which offers a radiant, glowy finish that works well with many skin types.
That said, one way to tell if a primer works right for your skin type is when applying your foundation.
It should glide effortlessly and blend with the primer nicely. Notice how your complexion makeup fares through the day as well.
Pick Lightweight, Oil-Free Foundation
A lightweight and oil-free foundation is ideal for combination skin.
You want something that lends a flawless-looking base and manages grease without ridding your skin of much-needed moisture.
Going for matte or semi-matte finishes is the way for skins with oily and drying issues.
I also recommend liquid instead of powder foundations, as they tend to be effective at hydrating the skin and keeping flaking at bay.
Some of my top picks for oil-free combination skin foundations are Ilia True Skin, Armani Luminous Silk, and Nudestix Tinted Blur.
Medium coverage Ilia True Skin is water-based. It’s breathable and buildable, allowing a natural-looking finish that many of us prefer.

Armani Luminous Silk is quite a luxurious option, but it does work like magic in hiding pores and fine lines in varied skin types.
It comes with glycerin to support hydration and has over 40 different shades.
For those constantly on the move, Nudestix Tinted Blur is a great foundation to have in your pocket makeup kit.
This natural-matte formula has vitamin E, which helps hydrate dry skin, and light-reflecting minerals to cover unsightly blemishes and discolorations.
Minimize Shine With Concealers
Concealers work great at fighting midday shine. When choosing concealers for combination skin, I say it’s best to decide depending on the coverage you need.
You want water or gel-based products, as they usually contain less or no oil.
Liquid concealers are fantastic if you prefer buildable coverage. But be wary of shimmer finishes. No one wants to have their oily zones shine brighter than they do!
On the other hand, look for oil-free cream concealers if you find medium coverage more desirable for your skin day.

Laura Mercier’s Flawless Fusion Ultra-Longwear Concealer is one of my favorites. It’s creamy, hydrating, and can smooth my skin’s complexion without a hitch.
The formula hides redness, hyperpigmentation, and blemishes effortlessly, too.
Another excellent pick is Dior Backstage Face & Body Flash Perfector Concealer.
This concealer is super hydrating and offers great oil control. I love that it’s buildable and creates a glowy finish without going too matte.
Keep It Loose With Setting Powder
A combination skin type paired with a humid climate is a recipe for cosmetic disaster. Fading, creasing, and migrating makeup – there are just so many things that could go wrong!
Applying the right setting powder can make a world of difference.
If you have oily skin, I recommend looking for a matte finish setting powder with grease-absorbent properties.
People with a combination skin type may benefit from applying these powders to the shinier zones of the face.
For those leaning on the drier side, you can opt for a setting powder with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid.

Givenchy Prisme Libre Loose Powder is a wonderful setting powder for mixed skin types.
It never failed to lend a radiant, airbrushed-looking finish to my makeup that actually holds the entire day.
If you prefer your powder pressed, Hourglass Vanish Airbrush Pressed Powder is excellent at covering breakouts and irritation.
The formula keeps oil at bay long and the blurred matte finish appears natural on your skin.
Final Thoughts
Your skin type is a massive factor when choosing makeup. But when your skin is unpredictable as the weather – oily greaseball one day and dull as a dessert on the next – picking the right makeup can be confusing.
It all comes down to preparing the right complexion products for the right scenarios.
Still, there’s no one-size-fits-all product to these things, so don’t hesitate to try different options until you find what works best for your skin.
