Lubriderm: A Brief Overview

Established in 1945, Lubriderm is a skincare company that treats dry, rough, scaly, and itchy skin, as well as minor skin irritations like skin burns from radiation therapy and diaper rash.

The company divides its products into three collections: Daily Moisture, Advanced Therapy, and Intense Skin Repair.

Daily Moisture products feature pro-vitamin B5 and other skin essential moisturizers for daily protection.

Advanced Therapy products are specifically formulated to relieve, repair, and restore extra dry skin.

Meanwhile, Intense Skin Repair products are enriched with Vitamin E and skin-essential minerals to repair rough, dry skin and strengthen a compromised skin barrier.

While they don’t target specific skin conditions like acne, eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea, Lubriderm products are ideal for general skin care.

They hydrate and maintain the skin’s natural moisture balance, making them a great everyday option for keeping skin soft and healthy.

Moreover, they’re lightweight and formulated with minimal ingredients, so they’re suitable for sensitive skin and those looking for simple, no-fuss skincare.

Aveeno: A Brief Overview

Like Lubriderm, Aveeno was founded in 1945. But unlike the former, which focuses on moisturization, Aveeno leans more toward treating specific skin conditions.

Among others, Aveeno offers solutions for eczema, urushiol-induced contact dermatitis, psoriasis, sunburn, and skin irritation caused by pruritus ani, hives, and chickenpox.

Aveeno comes from the scientific name for the common oat, Avena sativa, the company’s main active ingredient.

Nearly all of Aveeno’s products feature colloidal oats or oat extracts, which are avenanthramides with moisturizing and anti-irritant properties.

Oats extracts are also proven to reduce wrinkles, plump up the skin, and restore the skin’s natural barriers.

Aveeno’s products are split into three categories: Skin, Hair, and Baby/Kids.

Aveeno’s skin care products include body lotions, body washes, scrubs, facial cleansers and moisturizers, sunscreens, and anti-itch skin treatments.

The hair care range offers shampoos and conditioners tailored to different needs, such as hydration, scalp care, and strengthening.

For babies and kids, Aveeno provides gentle products like soothing lotions, body washes, and shampoos, designed specifically for delicate, sensitive skin.

Lubriderm vs. Aveeno: A Side-by-Side Comparison

Lubriderm and Aveeno are both owned by Johnson & Johnson, but they are distinct brands with unique formulations. Here are the differences between the two:

Cleansers

Lubriderm only has one cleanser in its product line: the Lubriderm Daily Moisture Body + Face Wash.

It’s a good generalist pick for people with basic skincare needs, and it contains pro-ceramide and shea butter which gently cleanses the skin and preserves its natural moisture barrier.

Aveeno has a more comprehensive cleanser line, with the most popular being the Positively Radiant Brightening Facial Cleanser.

It contains soybean protein, glycerin, coconut oil, and other plant-based ingredients to improve skin texture and even out skin tone.

Aveeno also has cleansers formulated for redness, dry skin, oily skin, and acne-prone skin, like the Calm + Restore Redness Relief Foaming Cleanser, Soothing Oat Cleanser, and the Oil-free Foaming Cleanser.

Lotions and Moisturizers

Nearly 90% of Lubriderm’s offerings fall in the lotion/moisturizer category.

Lubriderm Daily Moisture Lotion

Lubriderm’s best-selling lotion is the Lubriderm Daily Moisture Lotion, a lightweight, fast-absorbing cream that offers 24-hour protection and hydration.

It’s suitable for all skin types and works well as a daily moisturizer.

Aveeno, on the other hand, has a more comprehensive line of lotions and moisturizers, suitable for a number of skin care issues.

It has moisturizers for acne-prone skin, redness relief, sensitive skin, and dry skin. It also has creams with Board Spectrum SPF 15 to 30 for those who spend much of their day outdoors.

Skin Treatment

Perhaps the biggest difference between Lubriderm and Aveeno is their approach to skin issues.

Lubriderm’s cleansers and moisturizers cater to normal to extra dry, itchy skin.

And while they work for people with acne and other skin conditions, they won’t specifically treat those issues. Instead, they focus on providing hydration without aggravating the skin.

In comparison, Aveeno offers products for specific skincare conditions. It has cleansers and moisturizers for acne-prone skin, cracked skin, itchy skin, eczema, dark spots, and redness.

Aveeno also has products that cater to uneven skin tones, like the Tone + Texture Renewing Lotion and Renewing Night Cream.

Texture

Lubriderm’s moisturizers have a lightweight yet creamy texture.

They hydrate the skin without leaving a sticky, greasy film, making it an excellent choice for people with sensory issues or those who prefer a clean, non-greasy finish.

Meanwhile, Aveeno’s moisturizers have a smooth, medium-weight texture – thicker than some lotions but not heavy or greasy.

Both moisturizers absorb well into the skin, so you don’t have to worry about them leaving a sticky residue.

However, people who aren’t used to thick moisturizers may want to stick with Lubriderm, particularly if they’re not dealing with excessively dry, sensitive, or compromised skin.

Price

Lubriderm’s skincare products range from $7 to $15, making them an affordable, all-around choice for all your basic cleansing and moisturizing needs.

Aveeno is slightly more expensive, with products costing between $10 to upwards of $35, depending on the treatment it offers.

Basic cleansers and moisturizers are reasonably priced, while specialized skincare treatments, such as those for acne-prone skin or extra-dry skin, tend to be on the pricier side.

If you’re not dealing with major skin concerns and looking for a reliable skincare brand, Lubriderm won’t disappoint. It provides effective hydration without any fuss.

Meanwhile, Aveeno is a great choice if you’re looking to treat acne, redness, eczema, and other types of skincare issues, or if you’re looking for a brand with a more soothing, natural approach to skincare.

Final Thoughts

There’s no real winner in the Lubriderm vs Aveeno debate because they both cater to completely different skincare needs.

Lubriderm is ideal for those seeking a straightforward, affordable option for daily hydration and skin care without added complexities.

On the other hand, Aveeno is more suited for people looking for more targeted skincare needs like acne treatment, redness relief, and eczema care.
