Lip Stain vs Lipstick: What’s the Difference and Which is Best?

Lip Stain vs Lipstick

If you’re anything like me, you probably have a stash of lip products in every bag and drawer. Well, I believe it’s a wise thing to do since you never know when you might need one! That said, with so many options to choose from, things can be a bit overwhelming.

Nowadays, it’s not just about picking a shade of lipstick anymore; we have the luxury of deciding between different textures, finishes, formulas, etc. Lately, I keep hesitating between two favorites: the classic lipstick and the popular lip stain.

So, what are the differences between the two products, and how do you know when to reach for lip stain vs lipstick?

The good news is that I’m here today to break that down for you so you can decide which one deserves a spot in your daily routine.

What is a Lip Stain?

Just as the name implies, a lip stain is designed to “stain” your lips with a wash of color that lasts for a long time.

Unlike traditional lipstick that sits on top of your lips, a lip stain sinks right into the lips and doesn’t need a ton of touch-ups.

Usually, lip stains come in a water- or gel-based formula. This makes the feel of wearing one airy light.

It’s like there’s nothing on your lips at all. On top of that, they come in different formats, like liquids, gel, and pens.

One thing to consider about lip stains is that they can be a little drying since they don’t have the creamy feel of lipstick.

If your lips are feeling dry, it helps to put on a bit of lip balm before using a stain.

Pros

  • Long-lasting with minimum touch-ups required.
  • Lightweight with almost no feel at all.
  • Transfer-proof and fade-resistant.

Cons

  • Can be tricky to apply.
  • More difficult to remove than lipstick.
  • Can sometimes be drying on the lips.

What is a Lipstick?

Lipstick is one of the most classic and well-loved makeup products out there, and for good reason!

It’s a pigmented formula that coats your lips with rich color, instantly transforming your look with just a swipe.

Principally, lipstick is made of a mix of wax and oil, giving it that creamy feel. Unlike a lip stain, lipstick comes in a wide range of finishes and coverage levels.

From bold mattes and shiny colors to glossy sheers and shimmery shades, lipstick has got it all.

Pros

  • Bold, rich color with full coverage.
  • Creamy and moisturizing feel on the lips.
  • Easy to apply and remove.

Cons

  • Needs reapplication throughout the day.
  • Can smudge or transfer.
  • Heavier on the lips compared to stains.

Lip Stain vs Lipstick: The Differences

Choosing between a lip stain and lipstick eventually comes down to a matter of preferences.

So, there isn’t a product that’s better than the other; it’s all about the look you’re after.

Here’s a quick comparison:

1. Color Payoff

If you want a rich, bold color, lipstick is the way to go. It offers full coverage and typically has stronger, more vibrant pigment.

With lipstick, you can choose from hundreds of shades – everything from deep reds and dark berries to trendy pinks and bright metallics.

As for lip stains, they’re usually more subtle in color. While they do come in many different hues and levels of opaqueness, they’re generally less pigmented than lipstick.

2. Longevity

When it comes to longevity, lip stains have the upper hand. They’re designed to sink into your lips and hold their color for hours without smudging or fading (sometimes over 12 hours).

This makes them great for occasions when you don’t want to worry about frequent touch-ups.

Lipsticks, adversely, often require more upkeep. While they give you a richer color, they tend to smudge or fade, especially after a meal or a drink.

Some long-lasting lipsticks stay longer than others, but most will need a quick reapplication every few hours to maintain the fresh look.

3. Application and Removal

Applying lipstick is a simple process. You can swipe it straight out of the tube or use a lip brush for more precision.

Some shades might need a lip liner to keep the edges neat, but overall, it’s a quick process.

When it’s time for removal, most lipsticks come off easily with a regular makeup remover or even a face wipe.

That said, lip stains, though, are a bit different. Since they instantly stain your lips, they can be a little trickier to apply evenly.

They dry quickly, and therefore, you’ll want to work fast to avoid any patchiness.

As for removal, lip stains can be stubborn. You’ll usually need a makeup remover specifically for long-wear or waterproof makeup to get them off completely.
