Lip Oil vs Lip Balm: The Key Differences You Need To Know

lip oil vs lip balm

Lip oils and lip balms are fairly similar products, but they do have different uses. While they theoretically look the same, using both in the wrong scenario can do more harm than good.

In other words, this may be a comparison between the two, but that doesn’t mean they’re products of the same category.

Think of my comparison as a clarification of both products rather than a comparison of two products that do exactly the same thing.

That being said, let’s get right to it.

What Is Lip Oil?

Lip oil is a lightweight skincare product designed to moisturize and protect your lips.

Lip oil

Unlike traditional lip balms, lip oils are typically made with natural plant-based oils like jojoba, coconut, or rosehip.

They have a smooth, liquid texture that glides on easily and gives lips a glossy, shiny finish.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Lip Oil?

Lip oils slide on smooth and light. They sink into your lips fast without feeling sticky.

The natural ingredients work fast to heal dry skin. Most give your lips a nice shine without looking too glossy. People with sensitive skin love how gentle these oils are.

However, they do have some drawbacks.

For starters, lip oils don’t last long on your lips. You’ll need to reapply more often than with lip balm.

The small bottles cost more and can leak into your bag. Also, while they help with dry lips, applying them on excessively dry ones can backfire.

If your lips are super dry, these oils might not protect enough. They can feel slippery and slide off during windy days or while eating.

Some people also hate the shiny look, but I wouldn’t consider this one a con per se, since it can be a bit subjective.

When Should You Use Lip Oil?

Use lip oil when you want a quick moisture boost with a hint of shine. It’s perfect for days when your lips feel slightly dry but not cracked.

They also work great before applying lipstick to create a smooth base. They’re ideal for casual outings or when you want a natural, glossy look.

Time-wise, summer months are great for lip oils since they’re lighter than heavy balms. They’re exceptionally useful for people with sensitive skin or those who hate thick, waxy products.

They’re also good for wearing to work or during light activities where you don’t need intense lip protection.

In short, if you have minor lip dryness or just want to add a bit of moisture and shine, the good old lip oil is the way to go.

What Is Lip Balm?

Lip balm is a thick, protective product designed to heal and shield your lips from damage.

Lip Balm

Most lip balms come in stick or pot form and contain ingredients like beeswax, shea butter, and petroleum jelly.

These components create a strong barrier that locks in moisture and guards against wind, cold, and dry air.

Lip balms are typically “solid-ish” compared to lip oils, providing a heavier layer of protection for your lips.

They come in tons of different formulas, some of which have SPF (Sun Protection Factor), others with healing ingredients like vitamin E or aloe vera.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Lip Balm?

Lip balms protect your lips like a shield. They create a thick barrier against harsh weather and dry air.

Most last much longer than lip oils, so you won’t need constant reapplication. People with seriously dry or cracked lips get real relief from these products.

They’re also cheap and easy to find in any drugstore. You can stick them in your pocket and use them anywhere.

On paper, that sounds great, but we do have a few things to consider.

For starters, lip balms can feel heavy and greasy on your lips. This annoys some people and, somehow, gets a bit addictive (not literally) for others.

Some people even get too used to using them and feel like their lips get drier without constant application.

I have to point out the thick texture as well, which might look odd under lipstick. They’re not as pretty or glossy as lip oils – although they can work well on top of lip liner or lipstick.

Last but not least, in rare circumstances lip balms can cause allergic reactions in people with sensitive skin.

If you use the wrong formula, you might end up with more lip problems than you started with.

When Should You Use Lip Balm?

Lip balm is more about protection and maintenance than looking and feeling good.

It can stop damage caused by weather conditions, making it especially useful for people who are constantly subjected to weather changes.

The need for lip balm also increases if you spend most of your time outside.

In Conclusion

To sum everything up, lip oils are great for hydration and getting that glossy look, but if you want more protection, or if your lips are extra dry, lip balms are the way to go.
