Lancôme vs Estée Lauder: Which Luxury Skincare Brand is Best?

Lancôme vs Estée Lauder

Luxury skincare products can be a bit of a hit-and-miss. I’ve spent thousands of dollars on luxury skincare brands, only to go back to affordable basics like CeraVe and Aveeno because they work better on my skin.

It wasn’t until I tried Lancôme and Estée Lauder skincare products that I truly noticed a difference in the effectiveness of certain luxury products.

They may be three times as expensive, but the results are like night and day. Within a few days of use, my skin looked smoother, felt more hydrated, and had a glow that wasn’t there before!

In this Lancôme vs. Estée Lauder comparison, I’ll break down the key differences to help you decide which might be worth the investment.

Because let’s face it—these products aren’t cheap!

Lancôme: A Brief Overview

Lancôme is a luxury brand founded in 1935 by perfumer Armand Petitjean and aristocrat Guillaume d’Ornano.

It started as a perfume brand but eventually expanded its offerings to include all sorts of beauty products, including skincare and makeup.

In this review, I focus more on Lancôme’s skincare offerings.

The company has all the skincare products you’d ever need for a range of skin concerns, from aging and wrinkles to dark spots and uneven skin tone.

It has cleansers, toners, serums, day and night creams, masks, makeup removers, sunscreens, and even body care products like shower gels and lotions.

Lancôme’s ingredients are typical of what you’d find in most skincare products. Some of the most notable ones include:

  • Glycolic acid: Exfoliates the skin, unclogs pores, smoothes wrinkles, and improves skin texture.
  • Ferulic acid: Reduces the appearance of veins under the skin, and treats and prevents dark spots.
  • Hyaluronic acid: Increases skin hydration and reduces fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Niacinamide (Vitamin B3): Eases inflammation from conditions like eczema, acne, and rosacea.
  • Salicylic acid: Exfoliates the skin, removing dead skin cells to reveal visibly smoother, softer, and more radiant skin.
  • Bifidus extract: A prebiotic that helps strengthen the skin’s barrier function and repair signs of damage.

The ingredients above are all naturally derived save for salicylic acid, which is synthetically produced for skincare formulations.

Lancôme Absolue Revitalizing & Brightening Soft Cream Moisturizer

Some of Lancôme’s products like the Absolue Soft Cream Moisturizer feature patented ingredients like Pro-Xylane and LR 2412, which help smooth skin texture and improve radiance.

These ingredients are unique to Lancôme, contributing to the brand’s above-average cost.

Estée Lauder: A Brief Overall

Estée Lauder shares many similarities with Lancôme, which is why they’re often compared with each other.

For one, they’re both owned by the same company, L’Oreal. They’re both luxury brands selling mostly women’s products, encompassing skincare, makeup, and fragrances.

The company’s skincare line is just as comprehensive as Lancôme’s, ranging from cleansers and moisturizers to toners, masks, serums, and makeup lotions.

The biggest difference between Lancôme and Estée Lauder is the ingredients.

Much of Estée Lauder’s ingredients are derived from fruits and plants like apricots, algae, Japanese Beauty Berry, cucumber, coconut, dragon fruit, and Prickly Pear Cactus.

Other ingredients include:

  • Adansonia Digitata Seed Extract: Anti-aging extract from baobab, used in night repair.
  • Aminopropyl Ascorbyl Phosphate & Ascorbyl Glucoside: Stabilized forms of Vitamin C for anti-aging and brightening.
  • Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter): Deeply moisturizing natural butter.
  • Caffeine: Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits.
  • Retinol: Vitamin A derivative, effective for evening skin tone and reducing pores.
  • Dimethicone: Protective silicone that locks in moisture.

Lancôme vs. Estée Lauder: A Side-by-Side Comparison

Here are the differences between Lancôme and Estée Lauder:

Targeted Treatments

Lancôme uses ingredients like hyaluronic acid, rose extracts, and pre/probiotic fractions to hydrate and strengthen the barrier of the skin, which works well for treating early signs of redness, aging, and dullness.

One such example is the Absolue Revitalizing & Brightening Soft Cream Moisturizer, a creamy yet lightweight moisturizer that firms and brightens the skin.

This product uses the extract of Perpetual Rose, a unique variety of rose developed by Lancôme and specifically harvested in the South of France.

Meanwhile, Estée Lauder leans more toward advanced, clinically tested formulations with a focus on wrinkle reduction, firmness, and dark spot correction.

Estée Lauder’s Revitalizing Supreme+ Moisturizer Youth Power Creme

Estée Lauder’s Revitalizing Supreme+ Moisturizer Youth Power Creme is among the company’s best sellers, a multi-action cream that lifts, firms, and adds radiance to the skin.

Its main ingredient is Hibiscus bloom extract, which, according to Estée Lauder, is harvested in the morning to harness all its anti-aging effects.

Texture and Feel

Most of Lancôme’s products have lightweight, velvety textures that absorb quickly into the skin.

Let’s take the Revitalizing Supreme Moisturizer as an example. It’s soft and melts into the skin almost instantly, leaving your skin feeling fresh and nourished.

It doesn’t leave an oily feeling on the skin, which is a plus for people with acne-prone skin or those who prefer thin creams.

Meanwhile, Estée Lauder’s creams have richer, more nourishing textures, especially in products geared towards nighttime use.

They offer both hydrating and protective layers, with some formulations feeling denser on the skin. This makes them ideal for those who prefer a deeply nourishing finish.

Price

Lancôme and Estée Lauder’s skincare products are more on the expensive side. Cleansers cost between $35 to $75, while moisturizers can cost up to $160.

Face serums fall in the $90 to $200 range, with the highest-end serums reaching around $300 or more.

Despite the hefty price tag, many users including myself find the results to be worth the investment – especially if you’re targeting concerns like fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and loss of elasticity.

Plus, a little goes a long way with these products, making them last longer than your typical drugstore options.

Still, if you’re looking for a basic, no-nonsense cleanser and moisturizer and you’re not dealing with issues like acne, hyperpigmentation, and the like, Lancôme and Estée Lauder may not be the most cost-effective options.

They hydrate and brighten the skin, to be sure, but other brands – like CeraVe, Aveeno, and Lubriderm – do the same at half the cost.

I’ve written comprehensive reviews and comparisons with these products, so make sure to check them out if you’re looking for an alternative!

Final Thoughts

Lancôme and Estée Lauder are luxury beauty brands that focus on skincare, makeup, and fragrance.

Both brands offer a range of skincare products that cater to different needs, including dryness, fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and more.

Lancôme tends to focus more on hydration, radiance, and skin barrier repair with rose extracts and probiotics.

While Estée Lauder delivers advanced anti-aging solutions with ingredients like retinol and peptides.

Both offer high-quality, scientifically backed formulations, and the choice between them often comes down to your specific skin concerns and personal preferences.
