How to Get Coconut Oil Out of Hair: My Top Tips

Washing off coconut oil out of hair

Have you tried coconut oil to moisturize your hair and give it an extra shine? If yes, you’re not alone.

I did that, numerous times, and that’s why I know what the aftermath is like! Sometimes, we tend to overdo it with the oil, and suddenly it’s more “moisturized” than it should be.

After trying it more than once, and ending up with greasy hair every time, I’ve now worked out how to get coconut oil out of hair with some simple hacks.

The next couple of tricks have never failed me and I hope they rescue your hair as well!

1. Mix Aloe Vera With Shampoo

Many natural methods help remove excess hair oil, and one of the best among them is aloe vera.

Aloe vera is naturally clarifying and can help strip the excess oil away without being too harsh on your scalp or hair.

To use this method, mix a dollop of aloe vera with your regular shampoo, then apply it to wet hair. Work it into a lather, focusing on the roots and scalp, where oil builds up.

The aloe vera will break down the coconut oil, while its hydrating properties prevent hair from feeling completely stripped. Rinse thoroughly and, if needed, follow up with a conditioner.

2. A Lemon Rinse

When life gives you lemons, use them to bring light and freshness back to your hair!

The natural lemon juice acidity can cut through most heavy oils like coconut oil, leaving a refreshing scent and a touch of natural shine.

Mix the juice of two large lemons with about 8 oz of water, adding a spoonful of honey if you want some extra softness!

Pour this mixture on your scalp and leave it for a few minutes to soak. Wash and condition your hair afterward, and enjoy that refreshing, squeaky-clean feeling.

3. Baking Soda

Though this might seem a tad harsh to use on hair, a baking soda mixture is one of the best solutions I’ve come across for removing excess oil buildup.

With its gentle, natural grit, baking soda absorbs oil and refreshes your hair from root to tip.

Mix only two tablespoons with water to create a thin, spreadable paste, then massage it into damp hair where the oil is most felt.

Give it a few moments to work its magic, lifting the heavy oils away, then rinse thoroughly.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar

When it comes to detoxing your body from almost anything, apple cider vinegar is our unsung hero!

Dilute one part vinegar with five parts water, to create a solution that gently removes oil and leaves your scalp balanced and happy.

Pour this blend over your hair after shampooing, let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse with cool water. And don’t worry about the soft scent of vinegar, as it fades quickly.

Final Words

So, are you still wondering how to get coconut oil out of hair? I sure hope not! The previous methods never failed me. They’re natural, and quick, with easy-to-find ingredients.

My favorite is the first one with the aloe vera, as my hair is a tad damaged and the extra hydration helps.

When I happen to use more coconut oil than my scalp deems okay, I go for the lemon rinse, baking soda, or apple cider vinegar mixtures.
