How to Use Glycolic Acid in Your Skincare Routine

Glycolic Acid Skincare

You may have heard of glycolic acid from your dermatologist, on TikTok, or in the beauty aisle. It’s one of the most popular and widely used AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) in skincare products, and there’s a good reason behind the hype!

Adding glycolic acid to your skincare routine not only keeps your skin radiant and refreshed – its pore-cleaning powers also ensure that your other products and active ingredients can penetrate deep into your skin and work more effectively.

This guide will show you how to use glycolic acid for smoother, brighter, and more youthful skin!

What Is Glycolic Acid and Its Benefits?

Glycolic acid is a type of alpha hydroxy acid or AHA derived from sugarcane. It works as a chemical exfoliant that helps dissolve dead skin cells, revealing new, healthy layers underneath.

Glycolic Acid

Aside from promoting cell turnover, glycolic acid consists of tiny molecules that penetrate your pores, cleaning out sebum and acne-causing bacteria for smoother, clearer skin.

This powerful ingredient is also a humectant, drawing moisture to your skin and keeping it soft, plump, and hydrated. Plus, it boosts collagen production, which is useful for anti-aging.

When applied as a skincare product, glycolic acid can benefit your skin in many ways:

  • Brightens complexion and evens out skin tone
  • Smoothes wrinkles and fine lines
  • Fades dark spots, melasma, and hyperpigmentation
  • Encourages collagen production for firm, elastic skin
  • Clears pores and controls breakouts
  • Hydrates skin for a fresh, youthful look

How to Use Glycolic Acid for Skincare

Since skincare is a personal practice, the best way to use glycolic acid depends on your skin type, sensitivity, and goals. Always listen to your skin and adjust your routine as needed.

Here are some tips on how you can start using glycolic acid safely and effectively:

1. Start Slowly and Increase Gradually

It’s best to start with one glycolic acid product at a time, with a lower concentration of 5 to 10% to allow your skin to adapt. Introduce it gradually, using it one or two times a week.

Once you notice that it’s well-tolerated by your skin, you can increase the frequency or use stronger concentrations. Note that too much of the ingredient can cause irritation.

2. Use at Night

Did you know that glycolic acid can increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun and its UV rays?

That’s why you should ideally use your glycolic acid product in the evening, and protect your skin with sunscreen that has a high SPF during the daytime.

3. Don’t Skip the Moisturizer

Always apply moisturizer after using a glycolic acid product, as this chemical exfoliant can be drying to the skin.

This is especially important if you have dry or sensitive skin. Avoid using additional exfoliating scrubs as well, because too much exfoliation can irritate your skin.

4. Do a Patch Test

Although glycolic acid is generally safe to use, side effects like light stinging, redness, or breakouts are still possible.

Do a patch test on a small area of your skin and monitor for reactions. Or consult your dermatologist before trying a new product if you have sensitive skin.

5. Follow Product Instructions

Glycolic acid comes in various forms, from cleansers and creams to peels and face masks.

These products will have different formulations, some fit for daily use while others are for occasional intense treatments.

To make the most of your glycolic acid product, maximizing its effectiveness while minimizing the risk of irritation and side effects, read and follow the instructions for use carefully.

Here are a few general guidelines you may want to consider for each type of skincare product:

Cleansers and Face Washes

Glycolic acid cleansers and face washes usually contain a low concentration of the ingredient, making them acceptable for nightly use as the first step in your evening skincare routine.

Replenix Exfoliating Acne Cleanser

If you have oily or acne-prone skin like me, products like the Replenix Exfoliating Acne Cleanser combine salicylic acid and glycolic acid to keep your pores clean and prevent breakouts.

Skin Toners

A toner is another excellent way to experience the brightening and smoothening benefits of glycolic acid.

Apply a small amount to your face using a cotton pad or clean fingers, avoiding the eye area. Don’t use a glycolic acid toner on sensitive, compromised, or peeling skin.

The Ordinary’s Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution

The Ordinary’s Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution is a best-selling, budget-friendly toner that I keep coming back to.

It’s simple yet effective, and gentle enough for everyday use.

Creams and Serums

Creams with glycolic acid can provide more nourishment and hydration alongside exfoliation. They’re great for people with dry or sensitive skin.

Meanwhile, serums tend to have a higher concentration of the ingredient and are worth considering if you want to amp up its effects.

When it comes to creams, my personal favorite is the Glycolic Skin Renewal Complex, a moisturizing and even-toning face cream by Mario Badescu.

If you prefer serums, the L’Oréal Paris Revitalife 10% Pure Glycolic Acid Serum promises visible results after just one week.
