5 Easy DIY Lip Balm Recipes You Can Make at Home

Easy DIY Lip Balm Recipes

Did you know that some store-bought lip balms actually dry out your lips? I discovered this shocking truth years ago, and it set me on a path to create my own nourishing lip treats.

Now, I’m sharing my top homemade lip balm recipes with you!

1. Honey and Coconut Oil Lip Balm: Nature’s Moisturizing Duo

Jar of coconut oil with wooden spatula

This was the first DIY lip balm I ever made, and it’s still a favorite! Here’s how to whip it up:

Melt 2 tablespoons of coconut oil in a double boiler. Once it’s liquid, stir in 1 teaspoon of honey until well combined.

Fair warning: the honey can be a bit stubborn, but keep at it! Pour the mixture into a small container and let it cool.

I remember the first time I used this – it was like my lips had gone on a tropical vacation!

Honey is a natural humectant, drawing moisture to your lips, while coconut oil provides a protective barrier.

This combo costs a fraction of store-bought balms, about $1 per batch, compared to $5+ for store-bought options.

From start to finish, you’re looking at about 10 minutes of active time. And the whole thing lasts up to 6 months when stored in a cool, dry place.

Pro tip: Add a drop of vitamin E oil as a natural preservative to extend shelf life. It also adds an extra boost of antioxidants to fight free radicals.

2. Chocolate Mint Lip Balm: A Treat for Your Senses

Easy DIY Lip Balm Recipes

If you’re anything like me and can’t resist anything chocolate-mint flavored, you’ll love this one!

Start by melting 1 tablespoon each of cocoa butter and beeswax. The smell alone will have you dreaming of After Eight mints!

Add 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and 2-3 drops of peppermint essential oil.

Word to the wise: go easy on the peppermint unless you want your lips to feel like they’ve eaten an entire pack of extra-strong mints!

Cocoa butter is rich in fatty acids, providing deep hydration, while peppermint oil gives a refreshing tingle and promotes circulation.

This recipe takes about 15 minutes from start to finish – perfect for a quick self-care session!

This recipe costs about $2 per batch, making 2-3 tubes. It’s good for a year if you store it properly.

For extra dry lips, try substituting shea butter for half the cocoa butter. If you’re prone to cold sores, add a drop of tea tree oil for its antiviral properties.

Remember, a little goes a long way with essential oils!

3. Tinted Rose Lip Balm: Bloom from Within

This one’s my secret weapon for those “no-makeup makeup” days.

Melt 1 tablespoon each of beeswax and shea butter. Add 1 tablespoon of rosehip oil and a pinch of beetroot powder for color.

I like to pretend I’m a mad scientist at this point, cackling as I add the beetroot powder drop by drop until I achieve the perfect shade!

Stir in 2 drops of rose essential oil for a lovely, subtle floral scent. Pour into a small pot and let it cool.

Rosehip oil is packed with vitamins A and C, promoting collagen production for plumper lips. The natural pigment from beetroot gives a subtle, customizable tint.

This one takes about 20 minutes to make and costs around $3 per batch. It’ll last 3-4 months and gives your lips a beautiful, natural flush.

If beetroot isn’t your thing, you could also use a small amount of cocoa powder for a nude shade, or even a dash of cinnamon for a spicy tan color.

Safety first! Always do a patch test with essential oils, especially if you have sensitive skin. And remember, a little goes a long way – start with one drop and adjust as needed.

4. Lavender Vanilla Lip Balm: Relaxation in Every Swipe

Lavender Vanilla Lip Balm

This is my bedtime go-to. It’s like a lullaby for your lips!

Melt 2 tablespoons of almond oil with 1 tablespoon of beeswax. The almond oil adds a subtle nutty scent that pairs beautifully with the lavender and vanilla.

Add 1/2 teaspoon of shea butter and 3 drops each of lavender and vanilla essential oils. Pour into a small tin and let it set.

Lavender and vanilla aren’t just for aromatherapy – they have anti-inflammatory properties too!

This balm costs about $2 to make, compared to $10+ for similar store-bought versions.

It takes about 15 minutes to make and lasts up to 9 months. Just be careful if you have nut allergies due to the almond oil.

To keep your balm fresh, store it in a cool, dark place and use a clean applicator.

For a vegan version, swap beeswax for candelilla wax. Your lips will feel like they’ve had a spa day!

5. Green Tea and Vitamin E Lip Balm: Antioxidant Powerhouse

Green Tea and Vitamin E Lip Balm

I call this my “superhero” balm because it fights free radicals like nobody’s business!

Steep a green tea bag in 2 tablespoons of hot olive oil for 30 minutes. I like to use this time to catch up on my favorite podcast or have a little dance party in the kitchen.

Strain the oil and add 1 tablespoon of beeswax and the contents of 2 vitamin E capsules. Melt together, pour into a container, and let it solidify.

Green tea is loaded with antioxidants that combat environmental damage, while vitamin E accelerates healing.

This recipe takes a bit longer due to the steeping time, but it’s worth it for the skin benefits!

It takes about 45 minutes to make (mostly waiting for the tea to steep) and costs around $2.50 per batch. For maximum potency, use it within three months.

For sensitive skin, try using chamomile tea instead of green tea. You can also add a drop of peppermint oil for a gentle plumping effect.

Bonus Tip: Get Creative With Packaging

Half the fun of DIY lip balms is personalizing them! Reuse small tins or buy cute containers online. You can even make labels with your own designs.

It’s an eco-friendly way to elevate your lip care game! I love using washi tape to decorate plain containers or printing custom labels for a professional touch.

Pucker Up, Beautiful!

Creating your own lip balms isn’t just about soft, kissable lips (though that’s a great perk!).

It’s about knowing exactly what you’re putting on your body and having fun in the process. Plus, these make amazing gifts.

I once gave these as party favors at a birthday bash, and my friends still talk about it!

So, which one of these lip-smacking treats will you try first? Happy mixing, and here’s to happy, healthy, oh-so-kissable lips!
