CeraVe vs. Aveeno: Which Skincare Brand is Best?

CeraVe vs Aveeno

I’ve always struggled with skincare. I’ve dealt with acne, skin rashes, and dryness for as long as I can remember, and finding the right products that address my concerns without causing further irritation has been a constant challenge.

Through countless trial and error, two skincare brands showed pretty consistent results: CeraVe and Aveeno.

If you’re new to these brands and unsure of which one to buy, you’re in the right place.

This article breaks down the differences between the two to help you decide between CeraVe vs Aveeno.

Brief Overview of CeraVe

Founded in 2005, CeraVe is a US-based skincare brand that caters to all skin types. It offers a wide range of skincare products, ranging from creams and lotions to cleansers and serums.

CeraVe’s products are approved by dermatologists and deliver noticeable results with consistent and proper application.

It has since become a cult favorite due to its affordable products and proven effectiveness.

What makes CeraVe stand out among other skincare brands is its MultiVesicular Emulsion (MVE) Technology.

Unlike traditional moisturizers that release everything at once, CeraVe’s MVE technology offers sustained and prolonged hydration throughout the day.

This makes CeraVe products especially beneficial for people with dry or sensitive skin.

CeraVe’s products use several key ingredients to address various skin concerns.

This includes hyaluronic acid, which makes skin appear fuller and firmer, niacinamide and Vitamin C for brightening and hydration, and salicylic acid to restore damaged skin cells.

Some products also use jojoba oil for its anti-inflammatory and healing properties.

Brief Overview of Aveeno

Aveeno is a US-based skincare brand that has been around since 1945.

Brothers Sidney and Albert Musher founded the company based on the belief that centuries-old remedies could hold the key to modern skincare solutions.

In particular, they focused their research on the healing properties of oats for dry and sensitive skin.

Since then, Aveeno has published countless research proving the efficacy of oats and other natural ingredients in skincare products.

Oats remain the primary active ingredient in most of their products, including their moisturizers.

Like CeraVe, Aveeno produces a range of skincare products. Among these include moisturizers, cleansers, sunscreens, and serums.

Aveeno also sells haircare products like shampoos and conditions, as well as baby care products like diaper rash creams and gentle lotions.

Aveeno’s Daily Moisturizing Lotion vs. CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion

While I’d love to do a one-to-one comparison on all of CeraVe and Aveeno’s products, it’d be more beneficial to compare the efficacy of their moisturizers specifically.

This way, you can get a clearer picture of how each brand approaches hydration and caters to different skin needs.

Aveeno’s Daily Moisturizing Lotion: Great for Sensitive Skin

CeraVe vs Aveeno - Aveeno’s Daily Moisturizing Lotion

Aveeno’s Daily Moisturizing Lotion is formulated with colloidal oatmeal and rich emollients, leaving your skin feeling smooth, soft, and moisturized from the first application.

I have dry skin, and I can confirm that it does provide a nice boost of hydration throughout the day.

In just two weeks of regular application, my skin appeared significantly less irritated and flaky.

I’ve also noticed a noticeable improvement in texture and suppleness. It’s gentle on the skin and doesn’t cause any redness, which is huge during harsh winter months.

Aveeno’s Daily Moisturizing Lotion is fragrance-free, non-greasy, and absorbs quickly, making it perfect for use under makeup

It’s non-comedogenic, too, so I don’t have to worry about it blocking my pores.

CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion: Great for Dry and Flaky Skin

CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion

Unlike the Aveeno Moisturizing Lotion, the CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion has a lightweight formula. It’s thinner than Aveeno, in the middle between a gel and a lotion.

I’ve known about CeraVe since forever but only got into the hype train just recently after I kept seeing my favorite influencers talking about it.

And I can admit that the hype isn’t all for naught – this skin moisturizer is actually as good as they say.

Aside from dryness, I’ve previously dealt with flare-ups of acne. I’ve had no trouble with Aveeno’s Moisturizer but I would still get the occasional breakout.

Since switching to CeraVe, I’ve noticed a significant improvement in my acne-prone skin.

I was a little worried because of how lightweight it is, but I was glad to find that it doesn’t skimp on its moisturizing capabilities.

CeraVe’s Moisturizing Lotion uses glycerin as its main ingredient. Glycerin is a natural humectant, drawing moisture from the surrounding air to hydrate skin.

It also features three different types of hyaluronic acid and ceramide to keep skin smooth and supple.

The CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion is an excellent pick-up for most skin types, but it works best on people with dry and reactive skin.

If you have oily skin, I’d say the Aveeno moisturizer is the better pick.

Final Thoughts

CeraVe and Aveeno are both highly reputable skincare brands with dozens of top-notch products. One isn’t better than the other because they cater to different skincare needs.

CeraVe, for example, excels in hydration and barrier support, while Aveeno focuses on calming and soothing irritation for sensitive and oily skin.

The “best” depends on your specific skincare concerns and preferences.
