I’ve been switching between Garnier and Bioderma for years, using one over the other depending on my budget and cleansing needs.
Reviews online about these products are pretty mixed, so I’ve never really settled on one as the clear winner.
I aim to change that in this Bioderma vs Garnier Micellar Water review, where I compare the two brands based on their ingredients, removal effectiveness, and cost among others.
Which micellar water should you include in your skincare routine? Let’s find out!

Ingredients
Both Bioderma and Garnier Micellar Water are formulated with micellar technology, effectively cleaning the skin and removing makeup without repetitive rubbing, scrubbing, or rinsing.
They use just about the same number of ingredients, with Bioderma using slightly more than Garnier.
The biggest difference is that Bioderma uses cucumber extract for soothing and hydration, while Garnier’s formula has glycerin for hydration and hexylene glycol for texture.
Removal Effectiveness
Bioderma and Garnier Micellar Water are highly regarded for their ability to cleanse the skin and remove makeup effectively.
I’ve used both and never had to go beyond a few swipes to remove dirt, makeup, and excess oil on my face.
If I had to compare them toe to toe, though, I’d say Bioderma edges out in terms of cleansing power.

Bioderma removes stubborn makeup and waterproof mascara in under 10 swipes, while Garnier takes over 15.
I also found it tougher to remove dark eye makeup with Garnier. It does get it off, but you have to use more of the product.
I generally use light makeup so I rarely notice the difference in Bioderma and Garnier’s cleansing power. But if you tend to put on heavy makeup, I’d say you’re better off with Bioderma in most cases.
Gentleness and Hydration
Both Bioderma and Garnier are gentle on the skin.
I’ve used both products for the same amount of time and rarely experienced breakouts, dryness, or itchiness after use.
However, Bioderma does leave my skin feeling softer and more nourished than Garnier.
This is likely due to the additional skincare ingredients present in Bioderma’s micellar water, like Xylitol, Mannitol, and Rhamnose.
These ingredients act as humectants, retaining moisture in the skin.
Cost
Bioderma is more expensive than Garnier, with Bioderma costing around double that of Garnier, depending on the retailer.

If you value a softer, nourished feeling and a slightly better makeup removal, Bioderma might be worth the cost.
But if you’re like me and don’t use heavy makeup or have specific skincare concerns, Garnier Micellar Water might be the more practical choice.
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, the ‘best’ micellar water depends on your skin and budget.
For me, the disparity in cleansing efficacy alone doesn’t justify the price difference between Bioderma and Garnier.
I’ll still purchase Bioderma when it goes on sale or when I’m abroad and it’s cheaper, but I’ll stick to Garnier for my everyday use.
That being said, there’s no denying that Bioderma is the superior choice, especially if you’re dealing with skincare issues or have sensitive skin.
