Most of us use makeup brushes and beauty blenders interchangeably, especially when it comes to applying foundation. But each has its own use cases.
While it’s true that it all comes down to personal preference and the look you’re trying to achieve, I believe there’s still a clear winner in the beauty blender vs. brush argument.

Beauty blenders work well with cream, liquid, and pressed powder formulations, so they act as a convenient all-in-one tool for applying various types of makeup products.
Meanwhile, makeup brushes are ideal for applying powder foundations, bronzers, blushes, and highlighters.
You can still apply these products with a beauty blender, but brushes tend to offer more precise application and better control than sponges, especially with powder formulas.
Application
In my opinion, beauty blenders are the best option if you’re looking for an even and seamless blend of foundation on your skin.
Foundation brushes tend to leave streaks if not used with a light hand and proper blending techniques. This is especially apparent with brushes which have firmer bristles.
Beauty blenders give you that flawless, airbrushed look with little to no effort, making them ideal for beginners who have yet to master advanced blending techniques with the brush.
Coverage
There’s no real winner in this category because it all depends on the coverage and finish you’re looking for.
Generally, though, beauty blenders give light to medium coverage while brushes give you more coverage.
Brushes glide easily on the skin, giving you a high-coverage look with a lot less product.
Brushes also allow better control and concentrated application than beauty blenders. Stippling the brush gives you medium to fuller coverage while short strokes give you a lighter coverage.
Equally important, foundation brushes offer the least wastage because most of it is applied onto the skin with little left on the brush.
The same can’t be said with beauty blenders because their spongy material tends to absorb a significant amount of foundation.
Maintenance
Beauty blenders take a lot more effort to maintain than makeup brushes.
For one, beauty blenders need to be washed after every use because their absorbent nature makes them a breeding ground for bacteria. Brushes, on the other hand, can be spot-cleaned in between uses and deep-cleaned every week.
There’s not much difference when it comes to cleaning a beauty blender and a makeup brush; they both involve gentle hand-washing with a mild soap or makeup cleaner.
However, brushes can handle a bit more scrubbing compared to the delicate material of a beauty blender. This is also the reason why brushes tend to last longer than beauty blenders—they’re more durable.
Beauty blenders break down faster due to their soft material and constant damp cleaning, thus requiring more frequent replacements than brushes.
Brushes may be a bit more expensive than beauty blenders, but the cost per use ends up being lower.

To sum up, makeup brushes take the edge in terms of coverage, longevity, and variety.
However, I’d highly recommend always having a beauty blender to hand, to get that gorgeous airbrushed look from your foundation. Personally, I can’t be without my beauty blender now!
The downside of beauty blenders is that their reusability is limited compared to brushes due to hygiene concerns and product absorption.
At the end of the day, though, the “better” tool depends on your makeup priorities. If you tend to go for a more natural, effortless look, beauty blenders might be ideal.
If you value coverage, precision, and detailed application, makeup brushes might be the better choice.
