Getting into the haircare world can be overwhelming – it sure was for me!
There were many questions, but one left me stumped: argan oil vs. jojoba oil for hair – which is the winner?
The differences between the oils aren’t that varied, and the benefits are almost the same. So, how do you pick the right one for you?
I’ve been using both oils for years now so, trust me, I have some experience! Let me share with you what each oil offers and which is best for you.
The Origin of Jojoba and Argan Oil
Argan oil comes straight from Morocco, pressed from the kernels of the argan tree.
On the other hand, jojoba oil comes from the sunny deserts of North and Central America, from the seeds of the jojoba shrub.
Fun fact, jojoba oil is technically wax ester, which explains why it’s so lightweight and versatile.
So, what made these two oils so popular? For starters, argan oil is packed with nutrients, fatty acids, and vitamin E, making it great at moisturizing.
Meanwhile, jojoba oil’s molecular structure is nearly identical to the sebum our skin naturally produces, making it perfect for adding moisture without overwhelming finer strands.
Benefits of Argan Oil

Argan oil became a staple in my haircare routine because it offers various benefits, including:
- Fantastic hydration: Argan oil can help those of you with brittle, dry hair as it locks moisture, leaving your hair soft and smooth.
- Repair and protections: Thanks to its antioxidants and essential fatty acids, argan oil can help strengthen your hair without needing extra chemical treatments or products.
- Frizz taming: For those with curly or coarse hair, argan oil might just be your hero! It tames flyaways and smooths strands, helping you achieve a sleek look.
- Heat protection: Did you know that argan oil can be used as a natural heat protectant? I sure didn’t! Applying it before styling helps keep your hair safe from heat damage.
Personally, I’ve used a few drops of argan oil before going out and as a pre-styling treatment. One thing I’ve noticed?
It saved me lots of time taming my curls, and my hair doesn’t feel as dry as it usually would after styling without the oil.
Benefits of Jojoba Oil

After learning the benefits of argan oil, it’s only natural to wonder about the advantages of jojoba oil. Yet, they’re almost the same!
Jojoba might not have flashy nicknames like argan oil’s “liquid gold,” but it’s just as beneficial for hair. Here’s what jojoba oil brings to the table:
- Lightweight moisturization: The problem with many oils we use is they weigh down hair. Jojoba oil is perfect for moisturizing without overwhelming fine hair.
- Scalp calming: Jojoba oil can help calm a dry, flaky, or irritated scalp because it has anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties.
- Natural sebum balancing: This one I have to say is one of the main differences between the oils. Because it’s so similar to the oils in your scalp products, jojoba oil helps regulate sebum production.
Mind you, these three benefits aren’t the only ones jojoba oil can offer, but they’re among the main differences between it and argan oil. Otherwise, both oils are nearly the same.
While I prefer argan oil, jojoba oil is my go-to for scalp massages. It’s lightweight enough that I can use it on my roots without worrying about clogging pores or causing greasiness.
Which Is Best for You
By this point, you must be wondering which one you should pick for your hair?
Because both oils offer nearly identical benefits, the best choice often depends on your hair texture, condition, and specific needs. Let me show you how:
1. Damaged or Dry Hair
If your hair is dry or damaged due to chemical treatments, too much hair dye, pollution, and UV rays, argan oil is your best friend!

Its rich fatty acids and vitamin E will dive deep into your strands to repair and hydrate damaged strands.
2. Fine or Oily Hair
On the other hand, if you have oily hair or your scalp is often greasy, I’d say go with jojoba oil.
This isn’t to say it doesn’t moisturize as well as argan oil. Instead, its lightweight nature is ideal for this situation.
Also, it helps regulate the sebum on your scalp, potentially reducing oiliness without stripping away natural moisture.
3. Scalp Issues
Are you struggling with a flaky, itchy, or unbalanced scalp? Again, jojoba oil’s sebum-regulating and anti-inflammatory properties are your saviors!

It soothes irritations, reduces inflammations, and helps dissolve buildup. Argan oil can help just as well, but jojoba’s lightweight formula works better for sensitive scalps.
4. Thick, Curly, or Frizzy Hair
Coming from personal experience, for unruly hair types, argan oil takes the crown! Its heavier texture tames frizz, defines curls, and adds long-lasting shine.
If humidity leaves your hair in a constant state of chaos, a few drops of argan oil should smooth everything out.
5. Hair Porosity
High-hair porosity means your hair easily absorbs and loses moisture. If that’s the case with you, argan oil should be the go-to option.
On the other hand, low-porosity hair struggles with moisture absorption, leaving the oil to coat your hair but not sinking in.
In this situation, jojoba’s lightweight structure can help lock in moisture without overwhelming your hair. For those who don’t know their hair porosity level, check it out here.
Final Words
So, who’s the winner with argan oil vs jojoba for hair? For me, it’s jojoba oil, primarily because my hair is pretty thin and my scalp often unbalanced.
But for those with thicker or curly hair, I’d definitely recommend argan oil. You can also use it as a heat protectant when drying your hair.
